The finest example of graphic book design can be seen in the form of the ancient Egyptian "Book of the Dead" written on papyrus. In the Middle Ages, books mainly propagated sacred scriptures. These are the earliest forms of books as we know them today. They were written on parchment that was cut to the same format and then sewn at the side so they could be leafed through. The pinnacle of book design occurred from the moment the printing press was invented in Europe in 1440. The conceptual creator of the first printing press was Johan Gutenberg.

Books are usually printed in A5 or B5 format on offset paper, in perfect binding (side-glued), but they can also be produced in any other dimension and on various materials

Book Printing

In order for us to give you a price for printing your book you must have the following information:

Format (A5, B5, ... ):

you can view paper formats at this link

Print run (number of book pieces):

small print runs are produced on a digital press while large print runs are printed on an offset press

Number of pages:

1 sheet has two sides

Type of paper for inner pages (offset, kunstdruk ...) :

usually 80 g offset paper

Type of paper for your cover:

usually kunstdruk 350 g

Binding:

can be soft binding (binder), hardcover, spiral or stapling if there are few pages

In how many colors is the book interior printed:

if the printing is not black and white you must send the layout to show where the color pages occur

In how many colors is the book cover printed:

can be from one color 1/0 to full color printing 4/0

Besides these basic details always point out if you have special requirements such as, for example:

- binding the book on the short edge

- on the covers you want UV varnish, blinddruk, Pantone color or gold stamping (foil stamping)

- the paper is not standard offset but some special paper

- you want your book sewn

- ...

Book printing appeared in the Middle Ages. Medieval books were mostly Bibles. Later came books on law, medicine, natural sciences ... In the 15th century the first person to print books was Johannes Gutenberg

Book printing in our printing house is done by digital or offset technique depending on the print run.
