 Advertising Tarpaulin Design

5 Rules for Designing Advertising Tarpaulins

Advertising tarpaulins are placed outdoors and usually need to be visible from a great distance. They are also often located where passersby do not linger, so the design must match that purpose. The rules that are important for designing a flyer, brochure or business card do not always apply to tarpaulins. Therefore, it is good to follow the following guidelines when designing this advertising material.

  1. Consider the viewing distance and font size

The first thing to keep in mind is from what distance people will view your tarpaulin. If, for example, the advertisement is on a wall or another surface passed by cars, it is important to determine how far the road is from the object. Letters should be large enough for drivers to notice easily at high speed. Marketing research has shown that a driver has only 1.5 – 3 seconds to notice what is on the tarpaulin. On the other hand, if the tarpaulin is positioned so that pedestrians pass right next to it, the letters can be smaller. This table shows recommended text dimensions relative to the viewer's distance:

  1. Use contrasting colors

Text printed on a contrasting background is significantly more legible and noticeable than text placed on a similarly colored background. The distance from which letters are clearly visible varies by about 10% depending on the colors used, while for similar colors readability is very poor even at close range. Since advertising banners need to convey your message to as many people as possible, designers at the Proof printing house recommend some of the combinations listed below:

  • Black letters on a white background
  • Red letters on a white background
  • White letters on a red background
  • Blue letters on a white background
  • White letters on a blue background
  • Black letters on a yellow background
  • Green letters on a white background
  • White letters on a green background
  • Brown letters on a white background

Avoid white letters on a black background, as that combination reduces readability. Also, for text you can use colors such as dark pink, purple and orange on a lighter background. Turquoise is also highly visible, so you can combine it with one of its contrasting colors. 1. Use clear fonts

Unlike flyers and brochures, where it can be useful to "spice up" the design with interesting script fonts, for advertising tarpaulins it is better to stick to printed classics (Arial, Times New Roman). Although script fonts look nice, they are harder to read, especially from a distance. Also, do not use excessively thin typefaces, as they will not stand out enough.

  1. Do not overcrowd the tarpaulin with content

With tarpaulins it is important to remember that people usually see such advertising in passing or at events (e.g., at matches, concerts...) where something else distracts them. Therefore the most important thing is to have a striking image and a powerful slogan so that passersby remember your brand. Too many details can have the opposite effect – in a mass of information the most important thing is easily overlooked: your brand name.

  1. Consider who your potential customers are

Even the best advertisement can fail if it does not hit the right audience. Therefore it is important to keep the end user in mind when designing. There are some general guidelines to follow to make the tarpaulin look legible and clear, but the overall solution must be adapted to the people who may become your clients tomorrow. That is why it is very important to know consumer psychology and your target market. If you are not sure how to design your advertisement, our team can do it for you.

Advertising tarpaulins are easy to mount because they can have pre-made holes (eyelets) for hanging. Also, advertising tarpaulins can be attached with double-sided adhesive tape (duplofan) or have Velcro tape mounted on them. With Velcro tape the advertising tarpaulin can be easily removed.
